These parts are made of plastic and allow the wheels and tracks to turn freely. But, over time, small particles of dirt and grit in the water rub on these parts, scuffing the surface and leaving grooves in the bearings, bushings and wheels. That means more friction and also more slop or play between parts. This can cause misalignment and parts to rub or jam.
Also, after years of use, the tracks wear down, become stretched or floppy and therefore they can’t grip the surface as effectively, which means the cleaner may struggle or not be able to climb the walls.
Lack of Maintenance Can Lead to Expensive Repairs
All robotic pool cleaners monitor the load on motors to detect potential problems and shut down the machine to avoid a major problem. Worn drive system parts can cause tracks or wheels to jam and this can lead the machine to sense a motor overload or high limit and stop it working.
